Photography Challenge: May 16, 2014 - Favorite Place

May 18, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

This week's photography challenge, entitled "Favorite Place," was for you to portray your favorite place. This could be a place you like to go to, a place in your mind that helps you escape the world, or however else you wanted to interpret it. Many thanks to those who submitted photos this week! Keep up the great work!

My favorite place is anywhere dark enough for me to look up and see the stars. Whenever I am watching the stars, the world melts away and all of my problems, exhaustions, or frustrations temporarily disappear. No matter what issues follow me that evening, they are all insignificant compared to the vastness above.

I've always wanted to do more astrophotography and plan to expand further with this in the future, but for now I hope you enjoy these images. Friday night, there was too much cloud cover and I could not see the stars. However, Sunday morning I was able to see through some of the clouds. There was a very bright moon, which was able to light the entire field and actually cast shadows of the trees. I thought it created an awesome image even if it washed out the Milky Way and other stars. I will have to try again when the Moon is not out and perhaps borrow a telescope to get some deep sky images.

These images were taken at Great Meadow in Planes, VA between 12:30 and 1:30 am. I've listed the settings beneath each photo for those interested in how they were captured. These photos are single exposures and were not stacked. Enjoy!
